When it comes to dental crowns, many people have misconceptions that can lead to hesitation about seeking the treatment. At VanderLaan Family Dentistry in Byron Center, Michigan, Dr. Matthew VanderLaan and his team believe in providing clear, accurate information to help our patients make the best decisions for their oral health. Below, we’ll debunk three of the most common myths about dental crowns to help you better understand the procedure and its benefits.
One of the biggest misconceptions about dental crowns is that they are uncomfortable and noticeable. Many people fear crowns will feel bulky or stand out like an obvious dental appliance.
The Truth: Modern dental crowns are crafted for comfort and a natural appearance. Today’s crowns utilize advanced materials such as porcelain, zirconia, and ceramic that closely resemble the look and feel of natural teeth. These crowns are custom-fitted to match the color and shape of your existing teeth, ensuring they blend seamlessly with your smile. The fit is precise, providing comfort and durability without feeling unnatural.
At VanderLaan Family Dentistry, we use state-of-the-art technology to create crowns that look great and feel comfortable so you can eat, speak, and smile confidently.
Cost is another common concern when considering dental crowns. Some individuals believe that the expense of a crown is too high, or they assume it isn’t worth the investment in the long run.
The Truth: dental crowns are a worthwhile investment for your oral health. They are highly durable and can last many years—often ten or longer—with proper care. Crowns help protect damaged or weakened teeth from further decay, eliminate pain, and restore functionality, ultimately saving you from needing more costly treatments. Additionally, many dental insurance plans cover a portion of the cost of crowns, making them more affordable than you might think.
If cost is a concern, our team at VanderLaan Family Dentistry is happy to discuss financing options to ensure you can get the dental care you need within your budget.
Some patients delay getting a dental crown because they believe it is time-consuming and painful. This myth is often based on outdated methods and fears of discomfort during the procedure.
The Truth: The process of receiving a dental crown is now quicker and more comfortable than ever before. Thanks to advanced technology, many dental offices—including VanderLaan Family Dentistry—offer same-day crowns using CEREC (Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics). This means you can create and place your crown in just one visit without needing multiple appointments or temporary crowns.
As for pain, the procedure is minimally invasive. Local anesthesia ensures that you remain comfortable throughout the process, and most patients report only mild discomfort afterward, which can be easily managed with over-the-counter pain relievers.
